The cheapest, fastest, highest-return safety improvement in most homes — as long as they're anchored into something structural and placed where they're actually needed.
Of everything we do, grab bars deliver the most safety per dollar. They're also the thing most often done wrong. A bar screwed into drywall with plastic anchors will hold a towel; it will not hold a person mid-fall, and it fails at exactly the moment it's needed. Proper installation means fastening into studs or added blocking so the bar can take real body weight.
There's no universally correct height or position. It depends on the person's height, which side they're stronger on, whether they use a walker, and how they actually move through the space. We watch how the bathroom is used and place bars accordingly, rather than measuring to a generic standard.
Grab bars now come in brushed nickel, bronze and matte black that match ordinary bathroom fixtures. There are also designs that double as towel bars or shelves while still carrying full weight. If the appearance is what's stopping someone from accepting them, that's a solvable problem — and worth solving, because a bar that gets refused offers no protection at all.
You can, and if you hit solid studs and use proper hardware it may be fine. The risk is a bar that feels secure but isn't — drywall anchors can hold under gentle pressure and fail under the sudden load of a real fall. If you install them yourself, please make sure they're fastened into structure.
It's one of the least expensive things we do. Cost depends on the number of bars and whether we need to open the wall to add blocking where there's no stud in the right place. We price it before starting.
